A circular economy and industrial symbiosis project, inspired by the Danish model of Kalundborg (Denmark), developed by the Aretusa Consortium and promoted in Italy by Laviosa S.p.A. and the Simbiosi Industriale Group
LLivorno, 16 May 2025 – Laviosa S.p.A. At a time when environmental sustainability and industrial innovation represent strategic challenges for the future of the region, Livorno Simbiosi is an ambitious project that aims to replicate the Simbiosi Industriale model developed in the port city of Kalundborg, Denmark, in the industrial hub of Livorno and Collesalvetti.
The Livorno Simbiosi project stems from the legacy left by the European Horizon 2020 “Ultimate” project, The Livorno Simbiosi project stems from the legacy left by the European Horizon 2020 “Ultimate” project, won by the Aretusa Consortium, on the circular economy and aims to promote collaboration between local companies to share resources, recover production waste and optimise water, energy and material flows, thus creating new opportunities for efficiency and sustainable development.
The initiative involves an in-depth analysis of the needs and mapping of production flows in the local industrial sector, the formalisation of agreements between companies, and the design of infrastructure networks for the reuse and exchange of resources. The port areas of Livorno and Collesalvetti represent fertile ground for the activation of these synergies.
The project will be officially presented on the morning of 17 May in Livorno, as part of the Biennale del Mare at the Hangar Creativi (Via Carlo Meyer, 65), organised by the Municipality of Livorno and sponsored by the European Parliament, the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (MASE), the Defence Staff and the Tuscany Region. The event marks the launch of a new vision for the Livorno industrial hub, focused on innovation and sustainability.
